Installation Instructions for the SoPhTec® C-500 Water Conditioner

The SoPhTec® Model C-500 Water Conditioner is very easy to install. However, before attempting to install the unit please review the following instructions. (These instructions will be furnished with your water conditioner.)
Do not install the Model C-500 on a steam pipe or a pipe that carries water which exceeds 180° F.

The SoPhTec® Model C-500 Water Conditioner is designed for installation on 1/2" to 1 1/2" outside-diameter pipe. While the unit may be effective on smaller or larger pipes, you will realize the maximum benefit from the Model C-500 when installed under these guidelines. The Model C-500 is sometimes not as effective on iron or steel pipe as it is on PVC or copper. The best way to determine the effectivity on iron or steel is to perform a ninety-day trial. (For installation on pipe smaller than 1/2" contact your SoPhTec® Sales Associate [viz., General Environmental Systems] for assistance.)

For residential installations the unit should be installed on the cold-water pipe between the meter or other water source and the first point of water usage. (It will have a beneficial effect on home irrigation sprinkler systems and should be installed ahead of the point where the sprinklers and any outside hose bibs connect.)

For all other installations, ask your SoPhTec® Sales Associate (viz., General Environmental Systems) for assistance.

Prior to installation, examine the pipe where the unit is to be installed. If it is heavily coated with paint, stucco, concrete, or any other substance, clean this material off the pipe prior to installation of the Model C-500.

To install, first turn the thumb wheel on the front of the unit to move the two halves apart a sufficient distance to allow the unit to fit over the pipe. (If you inadvertently turn the thumb wheel so far that you disengage the threads on the adjusting screw, slide both halves into position just touching the ends of the screw and turn the thumb wheel in the opposite direction to reengage the threads.)

Next, place the unit over the pipe. The water flow can be in either direction with regard to the Model C-500. Turn the thumb wheel in the direction which moves the two havles of the unit closer together. Continue turning until the unit fits snugly around the pipe.

Important: The Model C-500 not only prevents scale formation, it also will remove existing scale. This is particularly true in your water heater. As existing scale is loosened by the conditioned water it will fall to the bottom of the water heater as a granular material. It is important to periodically flush this material from the water heater. This should be done approximately two weeks following installation and then at two- to four-week intervals until no loose scale is observed in the flushing process.

To flush the water heater, first turn off the cold-water valve on the inlet line to the water heater. Then attach a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the heater. This may not be a perfect fit but will be adequate. Run the end of the hose to an outside area which will not be harmed by hot water. Open the water-heater drain valve, then fully open the cold-water inlet valve. Observe the flow from the end of the hose. (If the flow from the hose is very light when the cold-water valve is turned on, it may indicate that the drain valve is the type with a very small opening and it is clogging with scale. Consult your SoPhTec® Sales Associate [viz., General Environmental Systems].) When no more granular material flows from the hose, close the drain valve on the bottom of the water heater and remove the hose.

Once in place, the Model C-500 normally requires no service of any kind. However, under certain conditions an accumulation of ferrous material can occur on the inside of the pipe where the C-500 is installed which can reduce the effectiveness of the C-500. If you become aware of reduced effectiveness, it is recommended that you remove the unit by reversing the installation procedure, run water from a hose bib or other nearby cold-water faucet for three to four minutes (longer if at a greater distance from the installation point) to flush the line. Then reinstall the C-500 per the instructions above.
